You can claim two tax credits, Child Tax Credit and Working Tax Credit - payable from April 2003. The general rule is that to qualify for tax credits you must be aged 16 or over and usually live in the United Kingdom.

Child Benefit is a tax-free payment that you can claim for your child. It is usually paid every four weeks but in some cases can be paid weekly, and there are separate rates for each child. The payment can be claimed by anyone who qualifies, whatever their income or savings.

Child Tax Credit is calculated taking account of the family income and the number of children. You do not have to pay National Insurance Contributions to qualify. Child Tax Credit is administered and paid by HM Revenue & Customs.
